I have a friend who's an artist and he's some times taken a view which I don't agree with very well. He'll hold up a flower and say, "look how beautiful it is," and I'll agree, I think. And he says, "you see, I as an artist can see how beautiful this is, but you as a scientist, oh, take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing." And I think he's kind of nutty. First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me, too, I believe, although I might not be quite as refined aesthetically as he is. But I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time, I see much more about the flower that he sees. I could imagine the cells in there, the complicated actions inside which also have a beauty. I mean, it's not just beauty at this dimension of one centimeter: there is also beauty at a smaller dimension, the inner structure... also the processes. The fact that the colors in the flower are evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting - it means that insects can see the color. It adds a question - does this aesthetic sense also exist in the lower forms that are... why is it aesthetic, all kinds of interesting questions which a science knowledge only adds to the excitement and mystery and the awe of a flower. Those affected discovered by workers are dumped far way from collony. It seems extreme but there is a serious reason why. Like something out of science fiction the fruiting body of Cordycepts erupts from the ant's head. It can take three weeks to grow and when finished the deadly spores will burst from its tip. Then any ant in the vicinity will be in serious risk of death. The fungus is so virulent it can wipe out whole colonies of ants. It's not just ants that fall victim to this killer. There are literally thousands of different types of cordiceps fungi and remarkably each specializes on just one species. Phoebe was a pony that we rescued with the help of Chances Mini Horse Rescue last summer. When I went to retrieve her the owners also had at least 2 other horses, perfectly healthy - and a new $30,000 horse trailer in the driveway. The owner stated, "Her feet just grow that way" when asked about her hooves that had overgrown so much she was immobile. She was in so much pain when I found her standing in a hole that day, that she would not even move her tail to defend herself from the insects that were swarming her, torturing her in the heat and humidity. She has moved on to Arizona, with her new owner Stacy. She is not able to run, but she has to be thehappiest equine I've ever come to know. The day we loaded her onto that big commercial trailer, she was thrilled to be travelling and more than anything we'd experienced together, that made my heart soar! We miss her, but she is doing well in Stacy's care....she's left a her tiny little hoof print on our hearts. less
